Discovering Your Passion - A Guide For Millennials

What the hell are you supposed to do with your life and why can discovering your passion seem like such a daunting task? This is a common question, especially when you are exiting High School and entering adulthood. This was my dilemma too. I felt like most of my friends had a pretty good idea about what it was they wanted to do but for me I was completely and utterly lost.

It wasn’t until recently that I really figured out what I wanted to do, what I knew I was born to do and what it was that aligned with my true authentic self. In life, it can be easy to be influenced by those around us and kind of just go with the flow. I see so many millennials follow in the footsteps of their parents. While there is nothing wrong with that and for some it is the correct path, no doubt, it’s not the right strategy for all of us. Not everyone will be cut out to do what their parents do and we need to be okay with that. It’s important that we all follow what is in our hearts even if that means it might let someone down. At the end of the day we need to be doing what fulfills us and aligns with who we are.

So tell me, does any of this sound like you?

Maybe you have….

1. Switched jobs a lot.

2. Changed majors a lot; or

3. You’re not even sure what the hell you’re truly passionate about.

Before you read any further I want to assure you that you are undoubtedly in the right place. Being a Millennial (for the majority of us) can be nothing short of a struggle. Let’s be honest with ourselves for a second. We are a generation that gets a bad wrap. Society says we are lazy and unmotivated. Worst of all society believes we all think we are “entitled” and that is BS. I’m sure some out there may feel that way but for the majority of us, it’s just that we aren’t willing to settle.

Yup, that’s what it comes down to. We aren’t willing to settle. It’s like, just because we won’t settle for what is a “Good paying job” or a “Good Career” like our parents may have, they automatically put us in this category that we are just some generation that feels everything should just be handed to us. So for anyone out there reading this that truly believes that, I have one thing to tell you: We are not the generation of lazy and unmotivated. We are, however, the generation who doesn’t settle for mediocrity and what society thinks we should do. We expect more from ourselves. We want to leave our mark in this world. We want to make a real difference!

Do you already know what you are passionate about?

For many, the answer falls somewhere along the lines of, “I think so” to “I have no idea what the hell to do with my life” and I’m here to offer some reassurance but most importantly – guidance.

Before you read any further grab your journal, a piece of paper or even better if you have it – your Passion Planner. This planner is very helpful when it comes to discovering your passions, reaching your goals and being more productive. You can learn more about the Passion Planner here.

Now, it’s time to dig deep and discover your true passion.

Am I an introvert or an extrovert? Maybe you fall somewhere in the middle.

What did you love doing as a child?

What do others say you are really good at? Maybe someone has told you how talented or skilled you are at something.

What can you talk about for hours? When talking about something you are passionate about you become excited and filled with energy.

What do you love learning about? Think about what topics you are naturally drawn to.

What are you naturally good at? This is something that comes easy to you when most people seem to struggle with this task.

What do you enjoy? If work, time, money, etc. were not a factor, what would you be doing all the time?

Take your time.

Sitting down and working through these questions will help you tremendously. Do not rush your answers. Think them through carefully. Sometimes it helps to ask your parents or a close relative what it was that you loved doing as a child or what they think your strengths and talents are.

Follow your dreams.

You might already know what you are passionate about, but are you using it to your advantage? The best work you will ever do, is the work you are most passionate about. Find that passion by answering the questions above and make your passion work for you. Explore career options that align with your passion. Fear may try holding you back. Don’t let it. Instead, step into your fear, be uncomfortable and watch yourself grow. It’s all about living a life full of happiness and fulfillment. Do this and you will certainly find this to be your reality!

So what is it that you are passionate about?
